This week on Talk Beauty, our Master Esthetician extraordinaire Michelle is here to dish out all the details on the best and boldest in brow technology - and yes, we’re talking about Microblading. If you’ve been entertaining the idea of trying out this service, we highly recommend taking a few minutes to read what this brow guru has to say - we have a feeling you’ll be seriously impressed.

I've been a Master Esthetician and permanent make up artist since 2003. I ran my own business in northern Michigan for five summer seasons, where I gained most of my independent knowledge and skills. I worked at the Cliff Spa at Snowbird Ski Resort for four winters, pampering clients from all over the world while enjoying the nature of the Wasatch mountains. I've been working at Got Beauty for ten years this month, which has been the best job a girl could ask for.

What IS Microblading?

Phibrows Microblading is a manual "hand" method of permanent cosmetics for your eyebrows which creates extremely fine natural looking hair strokes. The results? Perfectly natural looking, thick, full brows.

How long does Microblading last?

Depending on your skin type and care, the pigment will fade slowly over 18-24 months.

Is Microblading painful?

The service can be a little uncomfortable for those who are more sensitive. However, there is an anesthetic applied during to keep this to a minimum to where it is completely tolerable.

How does it work?

The pigment is applied with a specific Phibrows tool that has a row of several fine needles to create thin hair like marks in the skin. Your artist will choose needles and the blade type according to the technique and the skin type. The pigment is bladed just below the epidermis and the most shallow part of the dermis, making extremely fine natural looking hair strokes. A very natural result is achieved, as the hairs are bladed into the skin according to the natural hair growth direction. A touch up is included 4-6 weeks after your initial treatment.

How long does the service last?

The appointment should take about two hours.

Are there any pre-existing conditions that interfere with consideration for a Microblading treatment?

• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding (treatment is possible, though anesthetic will not be possible)
• On keloids or if you have tendency to keloid, birthmarks or moles.
• Diabetic.
• Serious diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, autoimmune disorders (doctor's note is required)
• Circulatory disorders (doctor's note is required)
• Any bleeding disorders (doctor's note is required)
• You're taking blood thinning medication
• Currently on Accutane or other strong retinoids (must wait until 6 months after treatment ends)
• If any skin diseases symptoms or irritation appears on the area.
• You've recently had Botox or Disport treatment (must wait 2 months)
• Old PMU
• You have a broken capillary in the eyebrows area
• If you have a sunburn.
• After waxing (must wait 3 days)
• After chemical peels (must wait two weeks)

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my service?

• Do not drink coffee, alcohol or energizing drinks on the day of treatment.
• Do not take Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E or Ibuprofen 24 hours before treatment.
• Do not take omega3 (fish oil) 1 week before treatment.
• Do not tan or have intense sun exposure 3 days before treatment.
• No waxing 2-3 days before treatment.
• No chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser or any other intense treatments 2 weeks before treatment.
• Shower and fix your hair as you need to take extra care not to get your brows wet for several days.

What can I expect during my service?

Here's a quick rundown of a typical service provided by an official PhiBrows artist:

  1. First, the artist will need to do a patch test on the skin at least 24 hours before the procedure. Make sure to call and book a 15 minute consultation prior to!
  2. Before the appointment begins, the artist will provide a quick consultation to discuss expectations and results of the treatment.
  3. The artist then draws on the eyebrow shape according to the PhiBrows golden ratio measuring tool. Brows are measured perfectly to complement your unique face shape and size.
  4. Next, the artist chooses the perfect PhiBrows color.
  5. Initial strokes are placed, then anesthetic is applied to reduce any discomfort.
  6. Pigment is worked into each stroke to define the brow.
  7. After, a pigment mask is left to absorb into the skin.
  8. Once that's finished, the artist cleans the area thoroughly.
  9. After the service, the artist will apply medical silicone that will remain on the skin for 12-24 hours.

Is there any after-procedure care?

Yes! Make sure to avoid ALL of the following:

• Increased sweating, practicing sports, swimming, hot sauna, hot bath or jacuzzi, sun tanning or salon tanning.
• Any laser or chemical treatments or peelings, and/or any creams containing Retin-A or Glycol Acid on the face or neck.
• Picking, peeling or scratching of the micro pigmented area in order to avoid scarring of the area or removal of the pigment.
• Performing tasks related to heavy household cleaning such as garage or basement cleaning where there is a lot of airborne debris.
• Drinking alcohol in excess as it may lead to slow healing of wounds.
• Driving in open air vehicles such as convertibles, boats, bicycles or motorcycles.
• Touching of the eyebrow area except for when rinsing and applying the post-care cream with a cotton swab.
• Before showering apply a layer of post-care cream to protect your eyebrows from moisture. During the shower keep your face away from the shower head. Itching and flaking may appear during the first seven days post microblading procedure, However, experience has shown that by following these aftercare instructions these symptoms may quickly disappear.
• Once completely healed, always apply a layer of sunscreen SPF 30 on your eyebrows when exposed to the sun. Sun exposure might cause the color pigment to fade away more quickly.

What happens during the touch up?

The touch up is recommended 4-6 weeks after initial treatment.  During your touch up, the artist will fill in missing hairs, add or make hairs longer or just achieve a darker color.

What's the Microblading healing process like?

Your new eyebrows will go through several phases during the healing cycle. True reflection of healed color can only be assessed 3-4 weeks after treatment. Touch-ups and/or correction of the shape/design is recommended at least 4 weeks after initial treatment. It will go from too dark, to too light, to just right!

Immediately after the procedure, the pigment will appear very sharp and dark. This is because the pigment is still seating on top of your skin and has not yet settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually (do not be alarmed if you see some pigment on the cotton swab as this is excess pigment and/or body fluid that is naturally exiting your skin).

Once the healing of the skin starts taking place it will look like dandruff flakes or dry skin. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly. However, this is just superficial color and dry skin being naturally removed from your eyebrows.

Your eyebrows will be the lightest tones during days 5-12 because the color is absorbed in the deeper layers of the skin. Later skin cells push it back to the upper layers. Once the healing is completed, you will enjoy a pair of beautiful, new, natural looking eyebrows.

The process is called Collagen Induction Therapy and is used to improve
• Texture and tone
• Surface scarring
• Fine wrinkles

Micro needling is based on the use of tiny needles to create micro channels (tiny holes) in the skin.  The process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produces collagen and elastin.

This repair process begins almost immediately and results in a thicker dermis and softened wrinkles or scars. We use the automated Eclipse MicroPen™ for its predictable performance and safety profile.

There is no tissue destruction with micro needling. The small channels in the epidermis close very quickly and the skin begins a healing response right away. Depending on the depth of the skin defect, you may see only redness or you may experience some pinpoint bleeding which stops almost immediately.

These superficial micro-channels also allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin. Specific treatment products can be selected to achieve accelerated results. We’ll employ various topicals depending upon your needs

  • Hyaluronic serums
  • Lightening or bleaching serums
  • Stem cells to multiply new young cells
  • Vitamin C for strengthening and antioxidant boost

Treatments per area are scheduled every 4 weeks. Results can take up to 3-4 months to show.

There are no limitations or preparations for this treatment. Just show up, chill for 25 minutes and you are good to go!

Fun Facts about Cryolipolysis is a medical treatment used to destroy fat cells. Its principle relies on controlled cooling to near 4° Celsius for the non-invasive localized reduction of fat deposits in order to reshape body contours. The exposure to cooling is set so that it causes cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue without apparent damage to the overlying skin. The procedure is billed as a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction. "Cryolipolysis" is a portmanteau of "cryogenic" and "lipolysis". Generically the process can also be known as "fat freezing" also known as Coolsculpting, cold sculpting, lipoglaze, clatuu, isolipo, 3d lipo, cryo lipo and more.

Cryolipolysis is used for removing certain areas of body fat that are just under the skin to contour a person. Evidence supports its effectiveness at three to four months.

It appears primarily applicable to limited discrete fat bulges. According to a 2015 review it shows promise with the average fat reduction, measured by calipers of about 20 percent. With the small number of people treated, clinical data remain scarce, thus it is not known how long the treatment effect will last, or when and if later treatments would be necessary to maintain the result.

Method of action

Lipolysis procedures attempt to "dissolve" fat cells by nonsurgical means. A number of methods have been attempted, including the use of laserultrasound, and radio frequency current. Popsicle panniculitis is a dermatologic condition that shows that exposure to low temperatures can selectively damage subcutaneous fat while leaving skin intact. Based on the premise that fat cells are more easily damaged by cooling than skin cells, Cryolipolysis was developed to apply low temperatures to tissue via thermal conduction. In order to avoid frostbite, a specific temperature level and exposure is determined. Physicians Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson at The Wellman Center at Massachusetts General Hospital originated the concept, explored it in a number of experiments on pigs, and reported their data in 2008. While the process is not fully understood, it appears that fatty tissue that is cooled below body temperature but above freezing undergoes localized cell death followed by a local inflammatory response, a local panniculitis, that gradually over the course of several months results in a reduction of the fatty tissue layer. When exposed to extreme cold, the body's usual response is to restrict circulation to keep the core of the body at the correct temperature. Cryolipolysis makes use of a powerful vacuum which adds to the inflammatory response by drawing blood up to the surface layers of the skin.

Spray Tan with Body Contouring FAQ & What To Expect

Preparation - Body Care

• You want to wear loose, black, comfortable clothing as illustrated in this picture. It is better if you have nail polish on before your tan, even if it is just a clear coat. Your nails and toenails will be wiped down at the end of your spray tan, and it prevents your nails from staining.  If you have acrylic nails or a gel manicure on before your spray tan appointment, the spray tan will NOT ruin your nails.

• It is recommended that you have any facial or body waxing done prior to your spray tan.  DO NOT get waxed after your spray tan and before your initial shower.

• Threading and waxing of eyebrows and lips should be done prior to your tan.  It is okay to have your eyebrows plucked the same day after your tan.  Threading can be done after your initial shower.

• Please exfoliate with a non-oil based, gritty scrub or exfoliant prior to your tan.  You want to remove all dead skin so your tan looks as even as possible.

• Eyelash extensions are okay to have on and do not effect your spray tan.  However because of the way eyelash extensions are applied, it is recommended that they be applied before your spray tan appointment.  They can be applied the same day, as long as it is before your spray tan!  This is because of the gel pads/tape that is used in the application process.

Preparation - Lotions/Makeup

• You CANNOT have any lotion, makeup, deodorant, sunscreen or oil on your skin at the time of your appointment - even if it has been applied earlier in the day.

• We have makeup wipes in the salon if you need to remove makeup prior to your appointment.  The makeup wipes at our salon can also be used to remove any lotion you have on at the time of your appointment, however we recommend that for the best results you remove the lotion in the shower or do not apply any lotion on after you get out of the shower before your appointment.

• Chapsticks/lip balms/glosses/lipsticks & mascaras are okay to have on during and after your tan. (Unless you over-line your lips.)

Spray Tanning - What to Expect

• If it is raining or snowing the day of your appointment, it is recommended that you bring an umbrella and/or wear protective clothing - such as LOOSE long pants, LOOSE long-sleeved shirts and a sweatshirt.

• If you take your bra off when you're getting sprayed, we do not recommend that you put it back on immediately after.  If you need to put a bra on after your spray tan, we DO NOT RECOMMEND sports bras; however, we do recommend putting your bra on the loosest strap with the bra straps tucked in.

• You will feel a little sticky and the spray tan does have a slight odor to it – this is normal.  You might feel sticky until your first shower. (8 hours minimum.)

• Try not to touch your skin to see if you are sticky. The solution does feel sticky while it is in the developing phase before your first shower and this is normal.

• If you touch your skin and do not wash the insides of your hands, your palms may end up becoming stained because palms are not supposed to come in contact with the spray tan solution. If you do accidentally touch your skin wash the insides of your hands as directed by your spray tan specialist!

• When needed, wash only the insides of your hands while the spray tan is developing. The most effective way to do this is with hand sanitizer or an antibacterial wipe. If you do not have these available, you can also use a paper towel or towel with soap.  Your spray tan specialist will walk you through this process at the end of your appointment.

• The bronzer may get on the inside of your clothes or on your sheets. It should not stain, however we cannot guarantee this.  Dark colored clothing is recommended and wearing long sleeves and long pants to bed can prevent the bronzer from coming off on your sheets.

Immediate After Care

• It is recommended that you do not shower for 10-12 hours if you use our original formula and 2-6 hours if you use our express formula.  Showering before the 10-12/2-6 hour time frame may lighten up your color and impact the results of the spray tan.

• No sweating, swimming, getting wet or exercising until your first shower after your spray tan. Doing so may cause streaks.

• DO NOT wash your face before your first shower. This also goes for not washing any makeup off your face before you go to bed.  Sleep with your makeup on!

• Putting makeup on after your spray tan is okay, however you CANNOT wash your face until your initial shower.

• There is a bronzer in the solution, which means that you will have some color immediately after you are sprayed.  The color will continue to darken as the solution develops.  Your color will lighten after you shower off the bronzer.  You will see color coming off in your first shower. This is normal.  Your spray tan is not washing off, it is just bronzer.

• Shower before working out or sweating.  Working out with the bronzer on may cause your tan to streak.  We recommend rinsing the bronzer off, then working out and then taking a full shower - just so you do not have to take two full showers back-to-back.

• Go easy around water the day you get sprayed – this includes everything from doing dishes to brushing your teeth. While you can still do these things, it is recommended that you use caution when you are near water to ensure you do not mess up your spray tan.

• We do NOT RECOMMEND wearing vinyl/rubber gloves to do housework the day you are sprayed.  We recommend waiting until after your first shower to wear those types of gloves.

• If you have small children, it is recommended that you bathe them prior to your spray tan or have someone else bathe them that day.

• If you are wearing your spray tan to bed, we recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants or covering your hands with socks while you sleep.  This will prevent the spray tan from transferring to your hands while you're sleeping and making them extra dark!  This step is extremely important.

• If you are coming later in the day/night and you can put on the clothes that you are wearing to bed, this is useful!

• If you take your bra off when you get sprayed, we recommend leaving it off for as long as you can after your spray tan.  Sports bras are NOT recommended to wear after your tan.  If you have to put a bra on, we recommend wearing a strapless bra or tucking the bra straps in.

Long Term After Care

• Pat dry after your shower.  Vigorous rubbing will exfoliate your skin and your tan will not last as long.

• DO NOT exfoliate with loufas, body scrubs, body washes or soaps with exfoliating beads until your tan starts to fade away.

•  Aveeno lotions are also NOT RECOMMENDED!

• Limit the shaving of your legs, as this is also a form of exfoliating.  You can still shave your legs, however we do not recommend doing it daily.  We DO NOT RECOMMEND using hair removal creams, such as Nair.  This will remove your spray tan!

• The tan is not going to just disappear, you are going to notice it fading.  You can start exfoliating when you notice it is starting to fade and/or in preparation for your next tan.

• Face washes containing salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide are NOT RECOMMENDED because they can eat away at your spray tan.  Your face will fade faster as you wash it more frequently.  We recommend using gentle cleansers - exfoliating face washes + Clarisonics are NOT RECOMMENDED!

• Acne spot treatments are also NOT RECOMMENDED during the week your spray tan is on.

• Moisturizing helps extend the life of your tan and it helps your tan to fade more evenly.  We recommend using a hydrating, non-scented/fragrance-free lotion!  SCENTED LOTIONS - I.E. VICTORIA'S SECRET & BATH AND BODY WORKS - ARE NOT RECOMMENDED!  Aveeno lotions are also NOT RECOMMENDED!  Farmhouse Fresh Shea Butters & Body Milks along with Cocoa butter lotion is okay to use, even though it does have a scent.

• Spray tans typically last 4-8 days, however they can last longer or shorter than this. The more you moisturize, the longer the tan can last.  You can use any moisturizer, but moisturizers containing self-tanners are not recommended because they can have adverse effects.  Any hydrating, non-scented/fragrance-free + alcohol-free moisturizer is recommend!

• It is recommended to moisturize at least once a day, however twice a day is encouraged.  You can start moisturizing after your first shower.  NON-SCENTED/FRAGRANCE-FREE moisturizer is RECOMMENDED! I love farmhouse fresh bath bombs, oils and bath milks as they moisturize your whole body without you having to go through the motion of rubbing in lotion all over your body. Their Shea Butters and Body Milks are also divine! <3

• Always wear sunscreen when out in the sun.  We also recommend mixing non-scented moisturizer with your sunscreen and putting both on at the same time each time you would normally apply your sunscreen - especially after prolonged exposure to the sun, being in the ocean or being in the pool.  This will help extend the life of your spray tan.

• Wait at least one day before going in the ocean or a pool after your tan.  Chlorine may make your tan fade faster, however it is not going to remove the tan immediately.

Fun Facts & FAQs

What exactly are lash extensions?

Allison O’Connor: Lash extensions are applied one by one to your natural lashes to extend, darken and add volume. They will look very similar to your natural lashes, but better!

Makeup.com: What’s the difference between full and partial sets? What is the most popular application?

O’Connor: A full set consists of adding an extension to each one of your natural lashes and takes about two hours to apply. A partial set is for those who want a more subtle look or for those who only want lashes on the outer corners of their eyes. This can take an hour or less to apply. The cat eye is quite popular for a polished and chic look!

Makeup.com: What's the difference between silk and mink?

O’Connor: Silk is used for a more dramatic look. The silk lash has a beautiful shine, with a more lightweight feel and darker shading.  Mink lashes are actually hollow hairs, so they are the lightest and softest extensions available. They make the lash appear lush and flirty!

Makeup.com: How long do they last?

O’Connor: Medical grade, formaldehyde-free extension glue is meant to last four-to-six weeks. Typically, the natural lash will grow out and shed the extension before the glue gives out. We like to see clients every two-to-three weeks to reapply lashes that have grown out and give the lash line a thorough cleaning. (You naturally lose about 5 lashes daily. Everybodies growth pattern is very different. This is why refills are so important to maintain your style.)

Makeup.com: Can extensions cause damage to your natural lashes?

O’Connor: Damage only occurs if the lashes are not applied properly or you pull or tug them out yourself. It's important that you have them applied by a reputable lash artist.

Makeup.com: How are extensions removed?

O’Connor: They grow out naturally and gradually, but if you decide that you don't want the remaining lashes, see your lash artist for a removal. We will take them off easily without damaging your lashes!

LEVEL 4- SudaTone Cream has essential oils of Melaleuca (Australian tea tree oil) and cinnamon were selected for their stimulating and healing properties. These ingredients accelerate blood circulation in the skin and improve the penetration in a compound that inhibits certain enzymes, thereby preventing fat solidification and storage in the fat cell layers. This is very intense and will heat your body to a much higher degree to further detox and eliminate cellulite.

Cream #4 was specifically formulated to work on areas of dense "hard" fat deposits. Unlike "flabby" fat that contains a lot of water- Dense fat beneath the muscle (visceral) are more difficult to access. The skin over these areas is usually not loose, but hard to the touch. The cream penetrates down to those areas of dense fat, and begins the process of loosening them so the body can use and loose the fat during your treatment.

You must have had at least 5 SudaTonic Treatments or have an Athletic Body with Dense Muscle Mass.

2. Cellulite Target Cream is applied minimally on problematic areas of fat.

  • Once you have actively sweat for 30 minutes you will continue to relax as the heat turns down for 10 minutes.
  • You will then be unwrapped and have the opportunity to towel dry off and use the restroom.

4.SudaTone #3 cream contains extracts which stimulate and activate the elimination of stored fat. Enriched with compounds, it acts on the metabolism by inhibiting the storage of fat reserves. The physiological conditions connected with the Thermo-Sudatioin (vasodilation faster metabolic exchanges)enable the active ingredients to infiltrate the fat cell layers more effectively. When allowed to completely absorb (10 minutes) it calms the skin and leaves you feeling relaxed, clean and not sticky.

The cream takes about 10 minutes to fully ABSORB and do its FINAL WORK of targeting deep fat deposits and if not given the full amount of time to be absorbed, you may feel sticky or continue to sweat. (Why we encourage lose comfortable clothing.)
